The second leg of the West
Cork Track & Field Championships (even ages) were held last
Sunday at C.I.T. which was a very well organised
event that ran smoothly. Well done
to all who competed for the Club namely,
Max Leahy, Liam Horstmanhoff, Beibhinn Horstmanhoff, Damien Williams, Finnian Lawton, Fionn
Harrington, Colm Hegarty, Darragh O'Brien, Sean Lawton, Sean McCarthy, Lily
Collins, Chloe Hegarty, Eva Leahy, Ellen Collins, Alice McCarthy, Caoimhe
Cotter, Aoibheann Lawton, Aisling Stock
and Rebecca Harrington.
There
were very strong performances with all athletes in the mix and notable improvements. Many
athletes qualified from the heats and semi finals to the finals.
Medal
winners were Sean Lawton in the boys under 14, 800m, who ran a very strong race
from the start and was overall winner, winning the gold medal. Sean Lawton was also a scoring member of the under 14 boys relay team along with Fionn Harrington, Colm Hegarty & Darragh O’Brien who all ran to their
strengths and were rewarded with the gold medals, an improvement on the silver
medals they won at the previous weekend's West Cork relay championships.
In
the boys under 16 1k development race, a new fixture on the West Cork calendar, Sean McCarthy finished in first
place. Aoibheann Lawton had a very good
run in the under 16, 1500m race and finished in 3rd place in what
was a very competitive race.
The girls under 16 relay team of Aoibheann Lawton, Ellen Collins,
Rebecca Harrington and Caoimhe Cotter put in great performances and claimed
the silver medals. The girls under 12
team made up of Eva Leahy, Chloe Hegarty, Beibhinn Horstmanhoff and Lily Collins were
unfortunate not to medal in the relay finals just being pipped on the line by
Bandon AC’s second team for the bronze medals.
Next weekend sees many of the Club athletes competing in the Cork County Track & Field championships and we wish them the best of luck.
