Report week ended 25th March 2018

Max & Liam making their debut for Durrus AC in the under 9s

  • Well done to all 17 athletes from the Club took part in the West Cork road races held in Dunmanway today. The sun shone for most of the day with the rain holding off until the last few races of the day.    Liam Horstmanhoff, Max Leahy, Damien Williams, Lee Moynihan, Alice McCarthy and Sean McCarthy took part in their first outing for Durrus AC.    The championships were for uneven ages this year and the majority of our athletes had to run up an age.  However, it was still a successful and enjoyable day for our athletes.  Congratulations to the medal winners, Fionn Harrington 3rd, Aoibheann Lawton 1st, Aisling Stock 3rd, Sean McCarthy 3rd.   We had a few close fourth place finishes with Beibhinn Horstmanhoff, Ellen Collins, Caoimhe Cotter and Colm Hegarty all coming in 4th position.   Well done to all our other athletes who were outside of the medals today but gave strong performances, Eva Leahy, Lily Collins, Chloe Hegarty, Finnian Lawton and Caoimhe Cotter.

  • The  Club wishes to extend a sincere thank you to all who took part, attended and/or donated prizes and supported the raffle for the Trad Session last weekend, which was a great success and a very enjoyable afternoon. It was wonderful to see our athletes showing some their other talents playing various musical instruments.   Thank you to the fundraising committee for organising the event.
  • Congratulations also to the evergreen Michael Harrington who was competing at the European Masters Cross Country Championships in Madrid this weekend.  Michael finished in 10th position overall in the O.45 category and was the first of the Irish athletes to lead the team home to claim the European silver team medals, with the team gold being won by Spain.
  • Next fixtures on the West Cork calendar are the West Cork Track & Field competitions which will be held over 2 dates.   Full information is on the West Cork Athletics Website here

Munster Schools Cross Country Report

Well done to Aisling Stock, Aoibheann Lawton, Ellen Collins, Caoimhe Cotter, Rebecca Harrington & Sophie Harrington who all competed in the Munster Schools Cross Country Championships today at Waterford I.T. in cold and blustery weather. Although ground conditions were very good, the course itself is a very challenging one with a lot of testing hills. All athletes put in strong performances for their schools, Colaiste Pobail Bheanntrai & Scoil Mhuire, Ballingeary. Aoibheann Lawton narrowly missed out on a qualifying spot for the All Ireland finals finishing in 17th place. Congratulations to Rebecca Harrington who finished in 15th place in the Intermediate Girls race and qualified for the All Ireland Schools Cross Country Championships which will be held in 2 weeks time at the same venue.

Well done to all girls for competing so strongly throughout the cross country season and no doubt the strength and endurance they will have gained from their cross country running will stand to them in the Track & Field season.
