Séan shines in Galbally.
The Munster uneven age cross country championships were held today on land in Galbally village, County Tipperary. The course comprised one large field with many loops to make up the various distances, which made for easy viewing for the spectators. Good weather prevailed, though the course was a true test of grit and determination with energy sapping heavy mucky underfoot conditions in parts. Six athletes from Durrus A.C. took part in the Championships. Standard at the Munster “A” championships is always very high and today was no exception, with up to 200 athletes in many of the races.
First up to represent the Club was Beibhinn Horstmanhoff in the girls under 11, 1500m race, who finished in 40th place out of a huge field of athletes and was unfortunate to miss out on a place on the Cork team by 2 places at the All Ireland championships.
Next up was Finnian Lawton in the boys under 11, 1,500m who had a very solid run and is improving from race to race.
Sean Lawton and Fionn Harrington competed in the boys under 13 2,500m race, both had great starts and ran strongly from the outset. Sean was running with the front runners throughout with Fionn not too far behind. Sean who has been having a great cross country season had an excellent race and finished in 5th place overall, winning two medals today, individual 5th place and gold on the Cork team. He secured automatic qualification to the All Ireland boys under 13 Cross Country Championships, which will be held in Waterford in December, as the top 12 automatically go through to represent Munster. Fionn followed closely behind in 22nd position and he also secured qualification on the Cork team in the All Ireland championships, being the 10th Cork athlete over the line. This is a great and well earned result for both Fionn and Sean.
The day concluded with Aoibheann Lawton and Caoimhe Cotter taking part in the girls under 15 3,500m race, both girls running strongly finishing in 29th and 50th respectively.
