Newsletter week ended 10th June 2018

Last week was a busy week for Durrus AC which commenced with our juvenile athletes taking part in the first leg of the West Cork summer leagues, which was held in Dunmanway Rugby grounds, hosted by Doheny AC.  It was a beautiful summers evening which was enjoyed by all the athletes who took part.   Well done to all who won medals and also to those who won medals in the mixed team relays with various West Cork athletic clubs;   Although many medals were won, emphasis on the Summer Leagues is taking part in a fun relaxed environment.  Well done to all. Details of upcoming Summer Leagues are here and specific details of next summer league here

On Saturday, Aoibheann Lawton took to the track in the 3000m at the Munster Track & Field Championships.    Aoibheann had a super race in which she made an early move to take the lead.  It was a very close battle between 1st and 2nd right up until the finish line but Aoibheann dug deep and fought hard to claim the gold medal, gaining a new p.b. of 11.28 (t.b.c. awaiting official results). Well done Aoibheann on a great win and being the first athlete from Durrus A.C. (since its reformation) to win a juvenile individual gold medal in the Munster Track & Field Championships !  She has now qualified for the All Ireland Track & Field Championships later in the summer.

At the Masters end of things, Michael Harrington took part in the Munster Master Track & Field Championships in Castleisland in both the 1500m and 3000m event.     Michael was a winner of both races and not only did he win both races outright (competing against athletes from o.35 +) but he also broke the Munster championship records in both events, bringing in a time of 9.20.39 in the 3000m (breaking a record which stood  since 2005) and bringing in a time of 4.24.45 in the 1500m (breaking a record which stood since 2009).  Congratulations to Michael who now goes on to compete in the All Ireland Masters Track & Field Championships later in the Summer.

Best of luck to our juvenile athletes who are competing in the Munster Juvenile Track & Field Championships this weekend in Waterford.

The Club are hosting their annual Bake Sale this Sunday morning (Father's Day) at 10 a.m. in Durrus village.   Please come along and support. What Dad doesn't like cake!!
